A mathematical model for VOCs removal in a treatment process coupling absorption and biodegradation

Biological treatments are used in gas treatment when containing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Key factor to enhance efficiency is maximize mass transfer from liquid. VOCs can be removed the flow by absorption a separate gas–liquid contactor before entering Two-Phase Partitioning Bioreactor (TPPB) (Two-stage unit). The Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (NAPL), silicone oil this study, able solubilize large amounts of hydrophobic while avoiding toxicity effects on microorganisms. aim study provide designing tool for degradation process occurring TPPB. Simulations considering coupled with biodegradation kinetics were considered investigating TPPB mechanisms. A single VOC (toluene) was first taken as reference assess accuracy model comparison experimental results. mixture seven (toluene, m-xylene, 1,3,5 trimethylbenzene, n-heptane, ethyl acetate, methyisobutylketone and isopropyl alcohol) presenting wide range hydrophobicity then implemented no interaction regarding their biodegradation. Degradation (representing an actual exhaust industrial plant) compared developed tends highlight that modeling results closed delivered shows transfer, through “kLa” value, key parameter NAPL renewal biological regeneration.
